Faroe Islands Introduces Remote Tourism

Half way between Scotland and iceland in the North Atlantic you find the Faroe Islands, a self-governing nation of 18 mountainous islands under the external sovereignty of the Kingdom of Denmark. Although the population is scattered over 17 of the islands, 40% live in the capital of Tórshavn. With a total population of only 50,000 inhabitants, the Faroe Islands are characterized by steep cliffs, tall mountains, and narrow fjords. The Norsemen who settled the islands about 1200 years ago called it “Føroyar” (meaning Sheep Islands) which became Faroe in the local language of Faroese.

Positioned strategically between Europe and North America, the Faroe Islands are only a couple of hours’ flight from the metropolitan centres in Northern Europe. Upon arrival, the scenery renders visitors a ravishing natural experience in a society with advanced infrastructure and digital networks. - https://www.faroeislands.fo/

The Faroe Islands have gone a step further in virtual travel with the concept of “remote tourism.” In their words....

We had an idea. What if we could allow people anywhere in the world to explore the islands as virtual tourists through the eyes of a local? Or even better; what if the virtual tourists could control the movements of the local in real time? A couple of weeks later, our idea became reality. We have created a new remote tourism tool, the first of its kind. Via a mobile, tablet or PC, you can explore the Faroes’ rugged mountains, see close-up its cascading waterfalls and spot the traditional grass-roofed houses by interacting – live – with a local Faroese, who will act as your eyes and body on a virtual exploratory tour. - https://www.remote-tourism.com/about-the-project

Known as one of the best kept secrets of Europe, the scenery is stunning and this destination is definitely one to add to your bucket list. If you miss the start of the tour or cannot get logged in (it is becoming quite popular) you can access all of their past tours on their Facebook page or Instagram Live. Happy Remote Tourism!
